ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF PHYTOCHEMICALS EXTRACTED FROM BRYOPHYLLUM PINNATUM ON VARIOUS MICROBES

Antibiotic resistance to synthetic drugs has been a common phenomenon nowadays and thus slowly the need for antimicrobial medicines from medicinal plants have been rising in the market. With due time, people have become more cautious about what kind of medicines they are taking and their side effects. So the need for organic drugs have increased and their market is booming now. Medicinal plants like neem, tulsi have been hackneyed since many researchers have already used them for their research purposes. So here in this project we have selected Bryophyllum pinnatum as our plant sample and we used the leaves, stem and roots of that plant to extract phytochemicals like Flavonoid, Phenol and Tannin to observe their antimicrobial actions on E. coli (isolated from drain water) and H. pylori (isolated from cow dung) and we received some incredible results. Not only the phytochemicals prevented the bacterial growth, but also they showed inhibitory property for 48 hrs. The phytochemicals were isolated by ethanolic extraction procedure and they were used to treat the bacterial cultures in vitro in their respective agar media. We have found that Flavonoid was most effective in inhibiting the microorganisms and thus we can use it for further research to prepare a more refined form of this phytochemical so that we can develop an organic antimicrobial drug in case of stomach infections.
